Abstract
The essay depicts the classicism of the "Weimarer Klassik" as a phenomenon of modernism. With the focus on this classicism it can be illustrated that the genesis of aesthetic modernism is a reaction to crises following the process of modernizing. The essay will discuss three aspects: the problem of cultural memory in modern art, semiotic and media innovations, and the interrelation between literature, theory of art and empirical sciences.
